The root economics behind the numbers
Oil palm doesn't behave like an evenly-fertilizable crop. Its feeder roots concentrate under the palm crown, and when fertilizer lands outside that zone, the palm responds in ways that quietly hurt yield.
Where feeder roots actually are
Ng et al. (The Planter, Vol. 98 No. 1155, June 2022) mapped feeder root distribution in mature oil palm and found 79% of feeder roots sit within the weeded palm circle (0–2 m radius), with 50% within 1 m of the trunk. The palm's uptake apparatus is highly localized.
What happens when fertilizer misses the palm circle
When fertilizer lands on vacant points, headland turns, or weed patches, palms respond by extending lateral roots to reach it. That extension is not free. It costs photosynthetic carbon, carbon that would otherwise have gone into fruit bunches.
Lynch (2015, Plant, Cell & Environment 38:1775–84) established the framework: the metabolic costs of soil exploration can exceed 50% of daily photosynthesis, and low-P conditions increase the fraction of daily photosynthate respired by roots by 75% in bean genotypes (Nielsen et al. 1998, 2001). Lynch & Ho (2005, Plant and Soil 269:45–56) quantify that rhizosphere acidification through organic acid exudation alone consumes 5–21% of daily fixed carbon. Every additional percentage point comes directly out of the FFB pathway.
What field trials show
Pradiko, Ginting et al. (ICOSEAT 2022, Atlantis Press) ran a five-year field trial on 9-year-old palms comparing palm-circle fertilization to conventional interrow broadcast. Palm-circle placement consistently produced the best oil palm yield. Same fertilizer, same palm, different placement, better yield.
The mechanism, plainly
- Broadcast spreaders can't see palms, they fertilize the geometry of the swath, not the biology of the stand
- Vacancy in the stand means a share of every application is going where roots aren't
- Palms respond by chasing nutrients with root growth, which comes out of FFB
- Precision placement removes the stress signal and returns the carbon budget to fruit
This is why the yield boost estimate above scales with your vacancy rate. It is the recoverable share of the palm's carbon budget currently spent on foraging.
